The Best Time of Year to Install Impact Windows in South Florida

People ask for the best month to install impact windows as if the weather were the whole answer. Weather matters. It is not the constraint that usually sets the date. Manufacturing lead time, the city permit queue, and whether a grant has to be approved before anyone orders glass decide the calendar more often than an afternoon thunderstorm. If you want the house closed in before June, the order usually needs to be in motion well before then.

Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. That is a planning fact, not a date when installers disappear. We install year-round from Hollywood. What changes in season is demand, the chance that a named storm pauses exterior work, and how hard it is to get an inspection appointment while every other opening in town is being boarded or replaced. Our note on why waiting for a forecast is too late is the short version. This is the working calendar.

Lead time is the real start date

A typical project is a measure, a proposal, an order, a permit, then the installation and a final inspection. Custom sizes, which are normal in concrete-block houses, are built to the measure. They are not sitting on a shelf in every color. If an association has to approve a frame color, that approval sits in front of the order. If you are pursuing My Safe Florida Home, the program's written approval also sits in front of the order. Starting work before that approval can disqualify a grant of up to $10,000. The "best month" is meaningless if the paperwork that has to happen first has not started.

The installation timeline explains the job once the product arrives. Add permit review on the front of that. Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Boca Raton do not share one queue. A complete application moves. An application missing the approval numbers sits. We would rather spend the time on a clean submittal than promise a week we do not control.

Cooler months are easier to schedule

From late fall through early spring, more homeowners are willing to open walls, crews are not stacking storm calls on top of contracted work, and you are not racing a cone on a forecast map. That is the stretch we suggest when someone has flexibility. It is also when stucco patch and paint have a kinder curing window than the middle of a humid August, though we still detail the opening so it is watertight the day the glass goes in. We do not publish a seasonal percent-off. Demand is generally softer outside the preseason rush, and scheduling is genuinely easier. Anyone promising a huge seasonal discount without showing the same product and the same scope is selling the calendar, not the window.

Spring is still a good time if the goal is glass in place before June 1. It is a worse time if you are starting from zero in May and hoping for a whole-home install before the first named storm. Partial protection, starting with the largest openings, is sometimes the honest recommendation. Pretending a May phone call becomes a finished, inspected house in three weeks is not.

What hurricane season does to a job in progress

If a storm watch covers the site, exterior work stops. Openings that are mid-replacement get secured. Inspections get cancelled. Manufacturers and supply lines slow down when the whole peninsula is ordering the same thing. None of that means you should refuse to start in July if the house needs it. A leaking, non-impact slider in the middle of the season is not something to leave until January for the sake of a nicer schedule. It means you should know that dates in season move, and a contract should say what happens if the city or the weather closes the job for a week.

Rain is ordinary in every month here. A competent crew does not leave a rough opening open to a daily storm. We stage the house so each opening is replaced and dried in before we open the next one when that is what the wall requires. Ask how the crew handles a pop-up storm. The answer tells you more than the month printed on the estimate.

A practical way to pick a date

Work backward. If you want a closed permit and a wind-mitigation inspection before next June, start the measure in fall or winter. If you are selling, start early enough that the permit can be finaled before the buyer's inspection, not merely "installed" with an open permit. If you only need one failed door replaced, the best time is as soon as the product can be built, regardless of season. The process page is the sequence we actually use, from measure to inspection.

Homeowners who travel for the summer sometimes want the work done while they are away. That can work if someone local can meet the inspector and if the association, where there is one, will allow access. It does not work if the measure has not happened and the color has not been approved. Book the measure before you leave. The install date can follow the manufacturing lead, not the other way around.

The glass we install is still impact windows and doors from PGT, CGI, ES Windows, and Custom Window Systems. The month does not change the HVHZ rules in Miami-Dade and Broward. To get on the schedule that fits your deadline, request a free estimate or call (754) 600-4876.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to install impact windows in Florida?

Late fall through early spring is usually the easiest time to schedule, if you are free to choose. The right month for your house is the one that leaves room for manufacturing, permits, and any grant approval before your deadline.

Can windows be installed during hurricane season?

Yes. Work pauses for a storm watch, and permits and crews are busier. If an opening is already failing, waiting for winter is not automatically safer. Dates in season should be treated as movable.

How far ahead should I call if I want glass in before June?

Start in fall or winter for a whole-home project. Custom sizes, association approvals, and city review all sit in front of installation day. A May start is often too late for a full house before June 1.

Does the off-season guarantee a lower price?

No. Scheduling is typically easier, and demand is softer, but a real quote is the product and the scope. Compare series and what is included before you chase a seasonal claim.
