Why Impact Doors Are Just as Important as Impact Windows in South Florida

When homeowners in South Florida begin researching hurricane protection, they almost always start with windows. This makes sense because windows are the most numerous and visually prominent openings in most homes. However, your exterior doors, including front entry doors, back doors, side doors, and especially sliding glass doors, are equally important components of your home's building envelope and must be just as well protected as your windows. In fact, doors often represent the largest single openings in a home, and a door failure during a hurricane can have even more catastrophic consequences than a window failure because of the larger volume of wind and rain that can enter through a door-sized opening.

The Florida Building Code requires that all exterior openings in the building envelope be protected against wind-borne debris in designated hurricane zones, and this includes every door as well as every window. Impact-rated doors undergo the same rigorous testing as impact windows, including the large missile impact test and the pressure cycling test, and they must demonstrate that they remain operable and maintain their seal after testing. Impact entry doors are typically constructed with reinforced fiberglass, steel, or wood skins over an insulated core, combined with impact-rated glass panels or sidelights that use the same laminated glass technology as impact windows. Impact sliding glass doors use laminated glass panels in heavy-duty aluminum or vinyl tracks with multi-point locking systems that secure the door at multiple points along its height. The frame, hardware, track, and locking components of impact doors are all engineered to work together as a system that resists the forces of a hurricane.

Sliding glass doors deserve special attention because they are ubiquitous in South Florida homes and represent some of the largest openings in the building envelope. A typical sliding glass door opening can be six to twelve feet wide and nearly seven feet tall, creating a massive vulnerability if the door is not impact-rated. Impact sliding glass doors are substantially heavier than standard sliding doors due to the laminated glass and reinforced frames, and they require robust track systems and roller assemblies to operate smoothly despite the added weight. The multi-point locking systems on impact sliding doors are critical because the long, tall door panels must be secured firmly against the frame at multiple points to resist the wind pressures that act across the large surface area. When we install impact sliding glass doors, we pay particular attention to the track anchorage, the threshold waterproofing, and the header and jamb reinforcement to ensure the door system performs as a fully integrated unit under hurricane conditions.

A common mistake we see is homeowners who install impact windows throughout their home but leave the original non-impact entry door or garage door in place, often due to budget constraints or the assumption that a solid door is inherently strong enough. This approach creates a critical weak point that can negate the protection provided by all the impact windows. Think of your home's building envelope as a sealed container: if any single opening fails, wind enters the structure, pressure builds, and the roof and walls become vulnerable to catastrophic failure regardless of how strong the remaining openings are. This is why we always recommend a comprehensive approach that addresses every exterior opening, and we work with homeowners to prioritize and phase their installation if budget is a concern. Starting with the largest and most vulnerable openings, typically sliding glass doors and the primary entry door, provides the greatest risk reduction per dollar spent. We can help you develop a phased plan that protects the most critical openings first while working toward complete protection for every door and window in your South Florida home.
